Verdell Melvin Thompson, 89, of Wauchula, FL, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 following a period of declining health.
Verdell was born November 5, 1935 in Cumberland County, a son of the late Melvin and Annie Thompson. He was the best man his children knew. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He loved the state of Florida for its people and climate, and he was an avid fan of racing. He would spend many Sundays glued to the screen watching NASCAR. He was a full-time camper at Peace River Thousand Trails in Wauchula, and he loved his campground family.
In addition to his parents, Verdell is preceded in passing by his wife of 38 years, RoseMarie Thompson; sister, Cecile Bulanyi; son-in-law, Rodney Abernathy; and brothers-in-law, Willy Bulanyi and Carroll “Buddy” Propst.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, David (Teresa) Thompson, Donna (Billy) Coffey, Doreen Abernathy, and Denise Church; honorary daughter, Robin London; grandchildren, Christine (Jeremy) Goodman, Daniel (Savannah) Thompson, Michael (Katie) Helms, Jody (Hannah) Helms, Dylan Abernathy, Tyler (Kayla) Wiggins, Tatum Wiggins, and Gabrielle London; sisters, Carolyn Daphine Propst and Terry (Jeff) Hildebran; fourteen greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 12:00 PM in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with Rev. James Propst officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Heritage Funeral Service from 11 AM to 12 PM.

The Lord wanted a special angel 😇 Verdell was a one an only kind of man, many years he put up with me always going camping KOA , Steele Creek etc. I was always staying with Denise eating everything insight. His passion for loving his family was amazing!! He made my days if he was back in town by stopping by B&B to see me! Love you always never be forgotten
