Rev. Wayne Alvin Matthews, 83, of Valdese, passed away on Friday August 30, 2024, at Autumn
Care following a period of declining health.
Wayne was born May 24, 1941, in Burke County, a son of the late Alvin and Edna Huffman Matthews. He retired from the furniture industry.
Wayne and his wife Christine Ministered at various churches and long term facilities, especially Autumn Care of Drexel which he became a resident. The Staff there became part of his family. Wayne enjoyed listening to gospel music on radio, TV and live performances .
In addition to his parent, he was preceded in death by his wife Edna Christine Jones Matthews, two brothers, William H. Matthews, and Julius Edward Matthews.
Surviving family are three sisters, Lillie Matthews Brittain of Connelly Springs, Linda Matthews McCoy of Las Cruces NM, and Joyce Matthews Abernethy of Hildebran, two brothers, Wayne’s twin brother, Wade B. Matthews, of Valdese, John Henry Matthews of Land-O-Lakes, FL and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Wayne Alvin Matthews will be held at 4:00 P.M. Tuesday September 3, 2024 in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Services, with Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Abernethy Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3:30 until 4:00 P.M. Tuesday at Heritage Funeral Service.

I am sorry to miss another brother. I wish I could have been there for Wayne. We had been apart for so long. I am going to miss him down here among us, but I know he is in a better place now. He will always be in my heart and memory. We are all very saddened by his loss.
