With deep sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Thomas Charles Clay, a cherished husband, stepdad and papaw, who entered his heavenly home on September 8th, 2024.
Affectionally known as Tommy, he was born in Ohio but grew-up in Pettus West Virginia and was raised by his loving grandparents, Mayo Andrew and Lorena Mae “Toie” Clay.
To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Tommy was more than just a papaw, he was one of their greatest fans. Whether through his silly stories, laughter, or childlike adventures he shared with them, Paw filled their lives with joy, leaving lasting memories that will be cherished forever. Tommy was a man who would give the shirt off his back to help another person. From killing spiders to helping those stranded on the side of the road, you could count on him to drop what he was doing and come running to the rescue.
In addition to his grandparents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Shane Griffith.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 28 years Judy Clay, who he loved with all his heart, a grandson, Jacob Settlemyre of the home, stepdaughters Tonya Harrison and husband Dusty of Morganton, Amanda Griffith of the home, sisters, Teresa Clay Thomas of Morganton and Robin Craven of TX. Also surviving are the apples of his eye, his eleven grandchildren, Elijah, Sarah, Gabriel, Sofia and Ezekiel Harrison, Alica Griffith, Brianna Griffith, Jacob Settlemyer and Rylee Griffith, Micah Griffith, McKenzie Gilreath; two great-grandchildren, Everlee Cross and Laina Riddle as well as his beloved dog, Marley and best friend Herbie Short.
A Service to Celebrate Tommy’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday September 14, 2024, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with Rev. Dusty Harrison officiating. Family and Friends are welcome to come and honor his memory and the love he shared with so many.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Heritage Service.
In Lieu off flowers, the family welcomes contributions in his memory, to help support Judy during this difficult time. For those who wish to contribute donations may be made to Heritage Funeral Service, 1507 Main St. Valdese, NC 28690. Your kindness and support are deeply appreciated.
