Ryan Scott Tanner, a kind, sensitive and compassionate young man, passed away unexpectedly on Monday June 26, 2023.  His death was the result of a roadside collision that occurred while he was performing his duties in the job he loved as a lead flagger at his mother’s company, Quality Traffic Safety.  He was 23 years old. Born January 1, 2000, Ryan was a life-time resident of Burke County and Valdese NC, where family and community were always important to him.  He volunteered at J. Iverson Developmental Center, Burke County Circles Initiative and Friends for Animals.  In 2015, while attending Freedom High School, Ryan received the Burke County Citizen Award – High School Student of the Year.  Ryan was a member of the Waldensian Presbyterian Church and had been involved in The American Adventure Service Corp (TAASC).

With his giving heart and artistic soul, Ryan had the wisdom of someone well beyond his years.  Ryan was gifted with an ability to see the best in people and to find the positive in any situation.  He was quick to laugh at his own mistakes and to forgive the mistakes of others.

The oldest in his family of cousins, Ryan was always the empathetic protector, carrying this trait into adulthood.  Ryan died as he lived, safeguarding and shielding those around him.

Ryan will be deeply missed by his parents, Randy Tanner and Heather MacDonald, his sister Ellette Tanner, his grandparents Scott & Judy Tanner, his grandmother Janice MacDonald, his aunt Stacie MacDonald Jones, his cousins Caleb & Eric MacDonald Johnson, his colleagues at Quality Traffic Safety, and all who knew him.

The family will receive friends Friday June 30 from 3:00-5:00 pm in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese with a Funeral Service to immediately follow.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favorite charity in Ryan Scott Tanner’s name.
