Mr. Robert Ervin “Nub” Deal Jr., 72, of Morganton, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023 at the Charles George VA Medical Center, following a period of declining health.
Bobby was born on November 1, 1951 in Burke County to the late Robert Ervin Deal Sr. and Verna Lee Cooper Deal. He graduated from Drexel High School in 1970, earned a two year degree from WPCC and went on to finish his four year at Western Carolina University. Bobby retired from DANA Corporation after 36 years of service as an manufacturing engineer, starting in 1978. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, and an endowed member , since 1988, of the Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge #217 of Morganton. “Nub”, as he was known to his friends, enjoyed outdoor activities, and fall was his favorite time of the year. He liked to trout fish, and hunt for deer, grouse and turkey. His favorite pastime was telling good stories, making people laugh and sipping on a bourbon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Connie Scronce.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, JoAnne Triplett Deal of the home, a daughter, Jennifer Deal Lambert and husband Scott of Morganton, and one son, Dr. Jason Deal of Morganton. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Bethany Ann Lambert, one sister, Brenda Roberts, a niece, Jackie Huffman and husband Todd, a great nephew, Jonathan Huffman and wife Olivia, and their daughter Ellie, a great niece, Kaylee Ward and husband Logan, his brother in-law and longtime friend, Tom Scronce and his beloved puppy dog, Oreo.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 3:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with Rev. Paul Deal officiating. Entombment will follow at the Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum, with military honors and Masonic Rites.
The family will receive friends on Friday, from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.

Nub joined the Marines buddy plan with my brother Mike Abee! They stayed friends until my brother died a couple of years ago! He was a great guy! RIP Mike and Nub!

Joanne, so sorry to learn of Bobby’s passing. Just the other day was telling a joke he had told to Steve who came home from work at Dana and told me. Bobby was the one who walked me to Steve’s desk to get his personal belongings. Hugs.
