Peggy Joe Jones McCall, 81, of Baton, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, July 14, 2023, at UNC Healthcare Blue Ridge – Morganton (formerly Grace Hospital).
The fifth of nine children, Peggy was born in her family’s home in Gamewell, NC on July 19th, 1941, to Thomas Carl Jones and Hazel Coffey Jones. She graduated from Gamewell High School in 1960. After going on a successful blind date in May of 1960, she married Wallace E. McCall Jr. on December 24th, 1960. She gave birth to her daughter Vicki in 1964, and she gave birth to Michael in 1980. She was a loving, caring spouse and mother that would sacrifice and provide anything she could to support her family. One of the most important roles she served within her family was that of connector and peacemaker. She devoted herself to supporting her brothers, sisters, husband and children; helping them connect, settle differences and caring for them when they were unwell. She also created lasting relationships in all of the jobs she held in the textile industry. From commercial sewing at Huffman Hosiers to textile weaving at Valdese Weavers (and several other textile jobs in between), colleagues appreciated her hard work, loyalty, and camaraderie. Peggy demonstrated the same values within her church family as well. A longtime member of the North Catawba Baptist Church congregation, she faithfully attended Sunday school and sermons for as long as her health would allow. After it became difficult for her to attend in person, she continued to listen to recorded services delivered by her deacon and other church members. She was grateful to support the church throughout her life. Peggy was supportive of many causes and always provided support when she could. She would listen to anyone, see the best in them, pray for them, and support them with whatever means she had. She was most fulfilled by helping others. One of her greatest joys over the last 4 years was meeting her grandchildren. Peggy treasured the time she was able to spend with Elianna and Terra, and she has left a lasting impact on their lives.
