Nell Berry Hildebrand, 92, passed away peacefully in the arms of Jesus on August
19, 2023, surrounded by her family.
She was the daughter of the late J. Cornelius and Sallie Hauss Berry and was born on September
17, 1930, in Valdese. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Charlie B.
Hildebrand, two brothers and one sister.
She is survived by three sons: Wendell Hildebrand and wife, Bonnie, of Hildebran; Barry
Hildebrand and wife, Melanie, of Hildebran; and Scott Hildebrand and wife, Mandy, of Hickory;
four grandchildren, Connor, Lydia, Erin and Riley; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Valdese High School (Francis Garrou) in 1948 and additionally graduated
from Clevenger Business College in Hickory. She retired from Childers Hosiery (later Neuville)
after 35 years as a bookkeeper.
Because of her business college education and experience in bookkeeping she served as secretary
and treasurer for many civic organizations with the last being the Hildebran Heritage
Development Association where she had been a founding member.
She was a life-long member of Abee’s Grove Baptist Church in Valdese where she served as
church clerk and Sunday school secretary for more than 60 years, a church in which her
grandfather was a founding member.
The family will receive friends at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 25 at Abee’s Grove Baptist
Church, with the service to follow at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary with Rev. Rudy Hayes officiating.
Interment will follow in the Abee’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Those serving as pallbearers are Charles Berry, Randall Berry, Wally Oaks, Mark Rodgers,
Brian Shipman, and Jeff Wilson.
Heritage Funeral Service & Crematory of Valdese is serving the family.
I have contacted Jeanne and Charlie. Thank you Wendell, for keeping me posted. You guys took such good care of your mom.
Nell was always willing to lead a hand when needed.
She was an asset to the Hildebran community, and will be missed.
