Mr. Max Dean Garland, 86, of Valdese passed away peacefully at Carolina Caring and went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 2, 2022, following a brief illness.
Max was born January 31, 1936 in Mitchell County, NC to the late Claude Dove Garland and Totie Taylor Garland. He retired as a machine operator at American Roller Bearing. Prior to retirement, he worked at Crestline Furniture and managed Mustang Oil Station in Rutherford College. Max was a faithful member of Icard’s Grove Baptist Church. He loved his family, his church family, fishing, and playing several instruments including the guitar and fiddle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Birdie Taylor; and brother, Dale Garland.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Howell Garland of the home; son, Lyle Garland and wife Tammy of Cherryville; daughter, Lori Greene and husband Eric of Drexel; brothers, Jack Garland and wife Martha of Valdese, Dudley Garland, Charles Garland and wife Beatrice, and Mark Garland and wife Kathy, all of Bakersville; sisters, Barbara Street and Marilyn Hughes of Bakersville; two granddaughters, Ashley Ingram and husband Brian of Marion and Megan Garland of Morganton; three grandsons, Chuck Bartlett and wife Mia, Curt Bartlett, and Shane Bartlett and wife Kerri; and great grandchildren, Taylor Garland, Landon Garland, Caroline Bartlett, Madie Bartlett, Lily Bartlett, Lucas Bartlett, Thomas Bartlett, and Eloise Bartlett.
A funeral service will be held 3:00PM Tuesday, December 6, 2022 in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with the Rev. Eldon Hinegardner officiating.
Entombment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends prior to the service, on Tuesday from 1:00PM to 3:00PM at Heritage Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Icard’s Grove Baptist Church or Carolina Caring Hospice.
