Julia Anne Harris, 84, of Ocean Isle and Valdese, NC, departed this life for her heavenly home on Saturday, August 3,2024, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Ms. Harris was born on July 1,1940, in Burke County, a daughter of the late Ellen C. and C.M. Harris. She was a faithful supporter of Seaside Methodist Church in Ocean Isle, NC. Additionally, Anne was one of the original supporters of the charity, Brunswick Family Assistance in Ocean Isle and was a champion for the American Cancer Society(following the death of her brother, Rex.)
A. Harris was a proud graduate of Valdese High School and Appalachian State. Anne’s entire teaching career was spent in the Guilford County Public Schools(Kiser Junior High School, Smith High School, and Gillespie Alternative School.) She was a career chemistry and physical science teacher and found great joy in helping young adults achieve their high school diplomas. Upon retirement in early 1990, Anne moved to her beloved beach home in Ocean Isle Beach. After working part-time in a locally owned bookstore, she purchased the Pelican Bookstore in 1992.Anne believed it was important to “keep brick and mortar stores open” and loved being a bookstore owner. In 2021, she sold Pelican Bookstore, after returning to Valdese to care for her older siblings.
In addition to her parents, Anne was preceded in death by her sister, Betty H. Sherrill; two brothers:Charlie H. and Rex C. Harris; and a nephew, Scott P. Harris. Surviving are her niece, Julie A. Gierat and husband,Scott, of Cibolo, Texas, and nephew, S. Chris Harris of Winston-Salem, NC. Nieces and nephews left to cherish her memory are Dylan P. Harris and wife, Alexandra Z. Stivers; Natalie A., John J., and Sam H. Gierat. Additionally, Ms. Harris is survived by her precious dog, Ellie, and numerous wonderful friends.

Annie was a bright spot in everyone’s day. She will be missed. I pray God’s peace during this time.
