Mrs. Joan Elizabeth Brown Powell, 89, of Drexel, went to her Heavenly Reward on Saturday December 23, 2023 at her residence after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Powell was born March 11, 1934, in Burke County, a daughter of the late Julius Roy Brown, Sr. and Ethel Arrowood Brown.  She was a faithful Christian and attended United Baptist Church.  Joan retired from the job she loved, childcare.  She worked with the Drexel First Baptist Child Development Center until it closed and then opened her own, Alpha Day Care in Drexel.  Joan loved to do oil painting and finished over 100 paintings.  She went with her husband every year to place flags on the graves of local  veterans.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a great- grandchild, Malachi Ferrell and four brothers, Jimmy Brown, Johnny Brown, Wayne Brown and Julius Roy Brown, Jr.

Surviving, are her loving husband of 69 years, Lloyd Powell, Jr. of the home, a daughter, Ethel Ann Powell of Drexel and three sons, Jeffrey Powell and wife Lee of Hudson, Douglas Powell and wife Alexandria of Morganton and Michael Powell and wife Janice of Elkin, NC.  Also surviving are the apples of her eye, her ten grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Joan Brown Powell will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday December 26, 2023, at United Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Mathews officiating.  Interment will follow in the Burke Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at United Baptist Church.
