Ms. Jean Auton Dalmas, 74, of Villar Lane, died on February 10, 2023 in Boone, North Carolina. Ms. Dalmas was born in Valdese on May 31, 1948, the third of four children to Mr. Jean Pierre Dalmas (1912-2002) and Ada Virginia Dalmas (1919-1995).
Ms. Dalmas graduated from Valdese High School in 1966. She continued her education at The University of North Carolina in Greensboro and graduated with a BA in Biology in 1970. She returned to UNCG and completed her certification as secondary science teacher in 1983.
She retired from Hoilman Electric Company in 1998 after twelve years as an office manager. Previous employment included: BioMedical Reference Laboratory, Burlington, NC; Girl Scout Council of Catawba Valley, Hickory, NC; Burke County Department of Social Services, Morganton, NC; and Rex Hospital, Raleigh, NC.
Jean was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary (Unit 234) in Valdese where she served numerous offices, including unit president. Through the American legion she was active on the state level serving different state officer positions. She was also the Chairman of Tar Heels Girls State Commission for three years and served as a chairman for several other committees. She was a past member of the Valdese Pilot Club. Ms. Dalmas also volunteered her time at the Waldensian Heritage Museum and served on the Planning Board for the Town of Valdese.
In her personal time, Ms. Dalmas enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble, birdwatching, cross stitching, making clothes, socializing with friends and family, and researching family genealogy. Through her research, Jean thoroughly enjoyed sharing the history of the Waldensians and the family.
In addition to her parents, brother Daniel William Dalmas (1943-1997), and niece Liz Dalmas Lloyd preceded her in death.
Surviving are her two brothers; J. David Dalmas and his wife Dora Allis Dalmas of Cornelius, and Pierre Allio Dalmas and his wife Debra Lambert Dalmas of Valdese. Additional survivors include three nieces, four nephews, and several grandnephews and grandnieces.
Service of remembrance will be held at 5:00 P.M., Saturday, February 18th, 2023 at the Valdese Heritage Venue Big Building with Rev. Jim King officiating.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the Venue. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice.

My mother and Jean’s mother were first cousins!
I just found out. I loved Jean. She was my Scout Master for a couple of years, and we would get her to reprise her role in From This Day Forward. I remember her fondly.
