Beloved husband, father, Papa, brother and friend.
Dean Toney passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024 after a brief illness with his family by his side. Born January 13, 1946, Dean was the youngest son of William Martin Toney and Virgie Martin Toney Travis whom he joined in heaven along with a brother, Rondell Toney and sister Paulette Miller. He worked for 29 years at Bassett Furniture, retiring at the age of 74 in the spring of 2020.
Dean loved his dog, Abby, his job, the outdoors, trips to Walmart, his family and friends, and especially spending time with his granddaughters, his “pride and joy.” Nothing made him happier than watching his granddaughters grow, taking them for walks with the dogs and he especially loved treating them to his favorite meal, McDonald’s cheeseburgers.
He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 50 years, Thelma, his daughter, Jaclyn Toney Pharr, son in law, Jones Pharr and his granddaughters Mia and Elle Pharr. Also surviving are his brothers Darrell and Larry Toney and sisters Shelby Bunch and Linda Auton, along with many beloved nieces, nephews and in laws.
Join us to pay respects and enjoy fond memories with loving friends and family. Per Dean’s final wishes, a celebration of life is scheduled on April 21, 2024 from 2-4pm at Heritage Funeral Home 1507 Main Street East, Valdese, NC 28690.

I remember well when I was a little girl and Uncle Dean would take us on long walks in the woods. Just to explore or to pick blackberries. I can still hear his laugh and see his beautiful smile. The memory I hold onto most was a phone call from him shortly before he got sick. He told me about his faith and belief in Jesus. His phone calls always ended with I love you.
I’m so sorry, Jackie and Jones. Though I never met your dad, I know he raised an amazing daughter, and through you and your beautiful girls his light will continue to shine. Sending prayers and holding you all in my heart.
Dean was loved by everyone he worked with at Bassett. Always there to help when needed. Always a smile on his face. Beautiful soul for sure. Rest easy my friend your journey is over and there is no doubt that you are with our Heavenly Father
The world was a better place with Dean in it. I have never met anyone that I felt cared more for the people around him than Dean. I don’t think he met a stranger. He could make friends easier than anyone I know. I guess that’s because he seemed to love life and have a big heart. Rest easy my friend.
