Gertie Etta Chapman Powell, 88, of Hickory, passed away on Saturday June 10, 2023 at Carolina Caring following a period of declining health.
Gertie was born January 25, 1935 in Burke County to the late Harry Chapman and Minnie Fredell Chapman. She was a devout Christian and a member of Longview Church of God. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Powell; brothers, William Raymond “Bill” Chapman, and Gray Bynum Chapman; and sisters, Lottie Fullbright, and Alice Davis.
She is survived by her children, Karen Phillips and husband Jim of Hickory, Paul Ronald “Ronnie” Powell of Hildebran, James Dexter “Jim” Powell of Hickory, Paula Craig and husband Silas of Hickory, and Amy London of Hudson. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at 4:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with Pastor Ken Jenkins officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday prior to the service from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Service
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory in Valdese is assisting the family.
