Mrs. Etta Isabelle Deal Barus, 94, of Valdese, gained her angel wings and passed from this earthly life to her heavenly home, to be greeted by her loved ones that had gone before her on July 29, 2024, following a period of declining health.
Isabelle was the first-born child to the late Horace Jones Deal and Tempie Mae Shuping Deal on October 9, 1929, in Connelly Springs, NC.
Isabelle was married to the love of her life, John Augustas Barus, Jr, who along with their daughter, Jennifer Elaine Barus Brittain and her three brothers and their wives, Roy Jones Deal (Hilda), Willie Ray Deal (Peggy & Joann) and Coy Horace Deal (Marlene) preceded her in death.
As a lifelong member of Abee’s Grove Baptist Church, she was very involved in missions, a Sunday School teacher, Church treasure, Sunday School Director and deacon’s wife. As a Girl Scout Leader for her daughters, she was very community service oriented and loved the history that surrounded her. She graduated from Western Piedmont Community College in 1971 with a Nursing Degree, worked at Valdese General Hospital (UNC Blue Ridge) and was an office nurse to Dr. Frank Steele until she retired. Isabelle enjoyed traveling, crocheting, gardening, family genealogy and time with her family.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jeanine Barus of Valdese, grandchildren: Kristen (Johnny Hines) and Jonathan McRary of Nashville, TN. She is also survived by her boys Coty and Nathaniel Adams and Kevin Hines, her girl Shelbe Williams, the Deal and Barus nieces, nephews, cousins and their children from North Carolina and Florida.
Per her wishes, the family will receive friends and relatives at Abee’s Grove Baptist Church Sanctuary on Thursday August 1, 2024, from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. with the Celebration of her Life to begin at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Rudy Hayes officiating.
Interment will follow in the Abee’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank those who provided her with care, support and prayers, Dr. Kerry Byrd and staff, Amorem Staff, Sherry and Katie E., Jackie Crawley, Shelbe Williams, Rev. Rudy Hayes and her Church family.

Jeanine: words can’t express the feelings you are now having but GOD knows. I feel a sense of loss having known Isabelle all my life. But I feel gratitude for the time she gave to her GA girls. Isabelle exemplified love in its truest form. May the scriptures give you comfort knowing she resides with her JESUS, her Jennifer and her Johnny. There are indeed twinkling stars in her crown.
Marsha, Dannie and family

Jeanine, Kristen and Jonathon,
I’m so sorry about Isabelle. I remember so many days thinking “wow, she’s amazing to have been a nurse so long!” And now here I am near to that. Isabelle was always lovely, kind and very sincere about her work. She was also very helpful. You could always see her devotion to the Lord as she worked so hard to serve others. It was a pleasure knowing her and knowing you guys for so many years. Times have taken us on different paths but love I. Our hearts will always bind us!! Love to you all!!
Jeniene. I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your sweet mom. Love and prayers for you and your family. Jane Perrou Rock
