Carolyn Pettrey Church, 79, of Connelly Springs, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Atruim Health Cabarrus, following a period of declining health.
Carolyn was born May 4, 1945 in West Virginia, to the late George Washington Pettrey and Alva Lorena Higginbotham Pettrey. Carolyn was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a faithful member of South Mountain Freedom Worship Center. Carolyn loved to help others in any way that she could if she found them in need. She loved cooking for her family, friends, and church family and everyone loved her cooking.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Pastor Clyde Church; brother, Billy Ray Pettrey, infant brothers, Roger Lee Pettrey, and George Washington Pettrey Jr.; and brother-in-law, Everette Eugene Johnson.
Those left to cherish her memory are; daughters, Rebecca Whisnant (John) of Connelly Springs, Regina Taylor (Mark) of Connelly Springs, and Renea Goff (Chris) of Lawndale; son, David Church (Meagan) of Lawndale; nine grandchildren, Justin Whisnant (Allison), Wendy Whisnant, Ivy Whisnant, Brittany Taylor, Mitchell Whisnant (Kassie), Gavin Goff (Kelsey), Paraleigh Goff, Zoe Goff and Jeremiah Church. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Sophie Whisnant, Damian Whisnant; infant Bentley Storm Goff; and infant Everly Mae Whisnant. Also surviving is her sister, Brenda Johnson; sister-in-law, Pansy Pettrey; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dogs, Cuddles and Noel.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff and Atrium Health Cabarrus for the wonderful care that they gave Carolyn.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Hertiage Funeral Service in Valdese with Pastor Donna Daniel, Apostle DJ Wiggins,and Rev. Gary Posey officiating. Interment will follow at South Mountain Freedom Worship Center Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brittany Taylor, Kassie Whisnant, Kelsey Goff, Ivy Whisnant, Wendy Whisnant, Paraleigh Goff, and Zoe Goff.
The family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Heritage Funeral Service.

Carolyn, when I met you you treated me like one of ur grandchildren, and continued to this day. You were such a beautiful soul and full of life. You meant so muvh to me and seeing you hold my daughter and loving her meant the world to me. Carol and Clyde were long time friends that meant so much to us. We thought of them often and remembered all the good times we had together. They moved away and we were not in contact as much as we would have liked. We will all be together one glorious day never to depart again. Love to all the family who are hold so dear to us. Carolyn I miss you so much you were my cousin but like you said our last words she said we are more like sisters I will always miss the good times we had growing up ,she said I Love You I said the same. Last words we spoke but I will see you in Heaven one day soon I know you’re having a family reunion no more pain will love you always. ❤️❤️❤️
We had a lot of respect for Bro. Clyde and Sis. Carolyn. They loved the Lord and loved God’s people. She will always be remembered for her friendliness and beautiful smile and laugh. She was a great cook and Woman of God. We are praying for all the family and love you very much.
