Mrs. Barbara Allen Sweezy Van Gerpen, 78, of Valdese, passed away on Sunday, February 4th, 2024, at Autumn Care of Drexel following a period of declining health.
Barbara was born July 31st, 1945, in Burke County, a daughter of the late Lawson and Wilma Stroupe Sweezy. She loved to cook and crochet and enjoyed passing the time with word searches. She loved spoiling her canine companion, Toby.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in passing by her son, Brian Van Gerpen; brother, L.B. Sweezy, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Judy Winckler.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 56 years, Larry Van Gerpen; daughter, Kim (Mark) Staab; grandchildren, Paige Gergen, Morgan Staab, and Wyatt (Rebecca) Staab; niece, Renee (Myron) Ruppe; sister-in-law, Eulala Sweezy; brother-in-law, Loren Winckler; and cousins Lori (Rob) Lasater, Julie (Mitch) Boydstun, and Jack Lasater.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at 11 AM in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with Rev. Dr. Josh Lail officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 AM to 11 AM on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at Heritage Funeral Service.
Entombment will take place the following day on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 10 AM at Catawba Memorial Park.

Barbara was a warm caring person who dedicated herself to her family. Caring for her son for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother and caregiver. She was a wonderful cook and made the best biscuits and gravy I ever had.
