He is survived by his four daughters, Debra “Debbie” Lowman (Tony), Julia “Julie” Duffey, Amy Lowman (Clay) and Jennifer Morehead (Travis). He was the proud “Paw-Paw” of 6 grandchildren. Stephanie Day, Justin Duffey, Matthew Morehead, Andrew Lowman (Katherine Cole, fiancée), Connor Morehead and Michael Lowman, as well as great-grandchildren, Madison Day, Micah Duffey, Liberty “Libby” Duffey and James Duffey. Born on November 7, 1932, Herb was the third oldest of seven children born to Dewey & Janie Broyhill. He is preceded in death by sister Anne Patterson, brother Walter Broyhill, and sister Francis Bryson. He is survived by sister Mildred Ashley, brother LC Broyhill and sister Linda Broyhill. Herb was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who always put his family and their needs above his own. He also loved the Lord and was a dedicated member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church. He was long-term faithful member of the choir, taught Sunday school, was a deacon, and played an integral part the church’s prison ministry. After retirement, he devoted much of his time to the Shekinah local food ministry at Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Herb had a passion for helping others and truly saw the impacts of how the food ministry served his local community. Another passion was repairing bicycles for local children in need. Herb never said no to anyone who needed assistance and he served on several ministry teams over the years to assist church members and neighbors as needs arose. Herb was known for his “big hugs” and his smile and positive attitude. He never met a stranger no matter where he went. Herb enjoyed many hobbies throughout his years. He was most passionate about singing and playing his guitar. He taught himself how to play as a young man. He formed quartets and went to sing at local churches to perform his favorite hymns. His favorite music was gospel and bluegrass since his greatest desire was to worship the Lord. His love for playing and singing hymns was only matched by his great love of listening to gospel quartet groups. He attended numerous concerts over the years but particularly loved Gold City Quartet. He was fortunate enough to meet the musicians and celebrated several milestone birthdays with them. Perhaps his favorite pastime was being outdoors with a fishing pole down by the lake or at the coast. He always looked forward to his annual fishing trips with his “fishing buddies” to the Outer Banks every fall. This group of men was a source of friendship and Christian fellowship for Herb and he rarely missed the opportunity to go. Herb was also a proud Army veteran. As a young man, he was drafted during the Korean War to serve in the U.S. 3rd Army Military Police Unit stationed in Georgia. He was proud to serve his country and enjoyed wearing his cap displaying his US Army unit. Above all these things, Herb wanted to be sure his family knew and loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He put his trust and faith in Jesus as a young boy and faithfully attended church regularly. He was a true example of genuine service of the Lord and ensured his family was at every church service. Herb had a love and passion for reading the Bible and enjoyed reading various translations. He lost count of how many times he read it entirely through. There was rarely a Bible trivia question that he would not know the answer to. He knew that every time he read God’s Word, God would reveal more of who He is and that gave him a deeper appreciation of the Lord and what He did for us. Herb will be missed greatly by many here who he left behind. However, he looked forward to going home to be with his Heavenly Father and all those who he had known and loved on this earth. His favorite Scripture from the Bible was this promise from Jesus: “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” – John 14:1-3. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at 3:00 PM at Oak Ridge Baptist Church with Pastor Nicholas Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
